DIANA BAUMBACH

La obra de Diana Baumbach tiene sus raíces en el acto del trabajo manual y la práctica diaria. Explora las intersecciones entre el arte, la artesanía y la vida cotidiana. El proceso y la materialidad son centrales en su trabajo. Diana emplea acciones repetitivas, a veces obsesivas, como perforar, coser y doblar para generar patrones. Los patrones apelan al deseo humano de encontrar orden, sin embargo, cuando están hechos a mano, resaltan la tensión entre la repetición y el error. Diana construye patrones mediante el desarrollo de un gesto simple que se vuelve automático con el tiempo.
Acciones repetitivas, lo doméstico, la mujer. Diana considera que el hogar es un espacio generativo en el que se desarrollan trabajos y habilidades importantes, pero que a menudo permanecen ocultos e infravalorados. Como observa Lucy Lippard, «lo que popularmente se considera ‘repetitivo’, ‘obsesivo’ y ‘compulsivo’ en el arte de las mujeres es, de hecho, una necesidad para aquellas cuyo tiempo se encuentra en pocos metros cuadrados».
bio_Originaria de Oak Park, IL (EE. UU.), licenciada por la Universidad de Washington en St. Louis (2003) y Máster enSouthern Illinois University Carbondale (2007). Ha realizado exposiciones individuales en la Universidad de Carolina del Sur, Universidad Estatal de Colorado, Arte Mare (Finlandia) y Universidad de Naropa, así como desarrollado proyectos de arte público en Estados Unidos y Países Bajos, principalmente dirigidos a un público joven. Premios y becas: Wyoming Arts Council (2015, 2021) , artista residente en el Museo Stundars y en la Universidad de Novia. Actualmente es profesora asistente y directora de galerías en la Universidad de Maine.

Contexto y apoyo curatorial_Durante la residencia realizamos un apoyo curatorial y acompañamiento logístico a la investigación, compartiendo conocimientos, experiencias, referencias y networking. La biblioteca de PACA sirve siempre de apoyo documental. Con Diana, en concreto, contextualizamos el trabajo con la lana, el tejido, las tramas y entramados tradicionales como el cebatu, usado en la arquitectura tradicional y que hemos realizado en nuestra propia finca hace unos años. Para hablar de culturas campesinas, artesanías, paisaje, tradiciones o construcción de identidades. Como introducción al trabajo del tinte textil, Diana pudo experimentar y conocer nuestro cultivo de Isatis tinctoria y todo el proceso de extracción de pigmento azul y tieñido natural.
Durante la estancia de Diana, hemos facilitado el conocimiento de proyectos de arte contemporánea, artesanía y agroecología afines a su práctica y ligados a los territorios: Hemos visitado el taller de Paz Mesa en Les Regueres (Asturias); nuestro propio proyecto en PACA con la Isatis tinctoria, primer contacto online con el colectivo Mutur Beltz (Carrantza, Bizkaia) y el proyecto Inland-Campo Adentro. THE RESIDENCY Context and curatorial support_During the residency we provide curatorial support and logistical support for the research, sharing knowledge, experiences, references and networking. The PACA library always serves as documentary support. With Diana, specifically, we contextualize the work with wool, weaving, traditional wefts and frameworks such as cebatu, used in traditional architecture and which we have done on our own farm a few years ago. To talk about peasant cultures, crafts, landscape, traditions or construction of identities. As an introduction to the work of textile dyeing, Diana was able to experience and learn about our Isatis tinctoria cultivation and the entire blue pigment extraction and natural dyeing process. Rizomando_ During Diana’s stay, we have facilitated knowledge of contemporary art, crafts and agroecology projects related to her practice and linked to the territories: We have visited Paz Mesa’s workshop in Les Regueres (Asturias); our own project in PACA with Isatis tinctoria, first online contact with the Mutur Beltz collective (Carrantza, Bizkaia) and the Inland-Campo Adentro project. BIO. Originally from Oak Park, IL (USA), Diana Baumbach earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis (2003) and her MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (2007). She has had recent solo exhibitions at the University of South Carolina, Colorado State University, Arte Mare (Finland) and Naropa University. Diana has undertaken public art projects in the US and the Netherlands, mainly geared towards young audiences. She received two Visual Art Fellowships from the Wyoming Arts Council (2015, 2021) after receiving Honorable Mention three times (2011, 2013 and 2014). She recently spent a year in Finland where she was an artist in residence at Stundars Museum and Novia University. Diana was formerly an Associate Professor and Foundations Coordinator at the University of Wyoming and is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Galleries at the University of Maine.
WORKS. Diana Baumbach’s creative work is rooted in the act of manual labor and daily practice. She explores intersections between art, craft and everyday life.
Process and materiality are central to her work. Diana employs repetitive – sometimes obsessive – actions such as piercing, punching, stitching and folding to generate patterns. Patterns appeal to the human desire to find order, yet, when made by hand they highlight the tension between repetition and error. Diana builds patterns by developing a simple gesture which becomes automatic to her body over time.
